ALP (Environmental Science)

Si Ling Primary School's Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Environmental Science nurtures students to conserve, appreciate, and respect the environment. Through hands-on activities, enrichment programmes, and student leadership opportunities, students develop the knowledge, values, and skills to protect the environment and find innovative solutions to real-world environmental challenges.

Overview

Environmental Science

At Si Ling Primary School, we aspire to nurture our students to be thinking learners and gracious citizens, who are able to take on future challenges. Environmental degradation has become one of the most prominent adverse phenomenon in today’s world.

We believe that our school’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP) – Environmental Science Programme, can educate our future generation on the importance of environment sustainability and conservation, making them more sensitised and encouraging them to find innovative solutions and methods to protect nature.

Aims

The Environment Science Programme (ESP) aims to:

  • Equip students with knowledge of general concepts in environmental science 

  • Instill values and foster appreciation of the environment in students so that they have a strong conviction in bettering the environment 

  • Allow students to apply knowledge, processes and skills, and attitudes from across disciplines/subjects to real-life environmental issues, making their learning to be relevant, meaningful and enjoyable

3H Approach

ESP adopts the 3H approach which covers 3 key developmental domains – HEAD (knowledge & skills), HEART (values & emotions) and HANDS (participation & contribution) to develop students who continuously use concepts and integrate skills and processes in inquiring phenomena related to the environment, think creatively and critically in solving environmental problems, communicate and work effectively in teams and have strong conviction in bettering the environment.

Themes in ESP

ESP focuses on five themes. The themes will provide the knowledge to study the environment and the solution of environmental problems.

ESP Activities

ESP includes experiential learning activities that seek to enrich students’ learning experience. The activities are mostly planned to align to the respective themes or the science topics, and they are either catered to students from a level or the whole school.

iCARE@Assembly

At Si Ling Primary School, iCARE@Assembly empowers students to become environmental advocates who inspire their peers to care for the world around them. Through engaging student-led presentations, demonstrations, videos, quizzes and interactive activities, our Environment Ambassadors and student leaders share important environmental issues and practical ways everyone can make a difference.

Each year, students lead school-wide initiatives on themes such as recycling and waste reduction, water conservation, energy conservation, biodiversity, dengue prevention and sustainable living. By learning from one another, every student is encouraged to make informed choices, develop a sense of responsibility for the environment, and translate knowledge into meaningful action both in school and at home.

Let's Recycle!

Our Environment Ambassadors (EAs) lead the Let's Recycle! programme to inspire their peers to take an active role in environmental conservation and develop sustainable recycling habits.

Each classroom has a dedicated Recycling Corner, equipped with a recycling bag and a weighing scale. Students are encouraged to bring recyclable materials from home and record their daily contributions by weighing and logging the amount collected. The data from every class is then consolidated as part of our Level Solidarity Challenge, where classes work together towards their level's collective recycling target. This fosters greater school spirit, teamwork and a shared sense of responsibility for caring for the environment.

Through this initiative, students learn that every recycling effort counts and that collective action can make a meaningful difference in building a more sustainable school community.

iCARE Week

iCARE Week is a signature school-wide event that celebrates our commitment to environmental stewardship through our CARE values – Conserve, Appreciate and Respect the Environment. It brings together the entire school community to learn about sustainability through meaningful and engaging experiences.

The week begins with a student-led assembly where our Environment Ambassadors and SciEinsteins Club members introduce the environmental theme for the year. Through interactive presentations, videos, demonstrations and quizzes, students raise awareness of current environmental issues while inspiring their peers to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. These opportunities also allow our student leaders to develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of ownership in leading environmental initiatives.

Students also participate in a variety of hands-on recess activities designed around the annual theme. Activities have included water and energy conservation challenges, recycling and waste-sorting games, biodiversity and dengue awareness stations, eco-crafts using recycled materials, sustainability quizzes, and other interactive experiences that encourage students to apply what they have learnt in fun and meaningful ways.

Through iCARE Week, students are empowered to become advocates for the environment by learning, leading and taking action. Together, we nurture environmentally responsible citizens who understand that every small action contributes towards building a more sustainable future.

The event starts with an assembly programme that highlights the environmental theme of the year. To promote environmental conservation to their peers in a fun and engaging manner, our students from the SCE perform short skits and show videos. Not only do our students enjoy the show by the SCE, students of the SCE also get to build their confidence and hone their communication skills.

Meanwhile, students are kept busy partaking in recess activities such as energy conservation trails, sorting trash into the right categories, finger puppets making using recycled materials, solar car challenge and windmill-making. Through these activities, we seek to convince others to appreciate the environment and inspire them to do their part in conserving the environment.

Whizz Kid

Whizz Kid is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activity.

Students in school uniforms engaged in hands-on Whizz Kid activities, with one group working with a teacher outdoors using foil and materials, another student carefully assembling a project with tape and cardboard, and a third group collaborating on a structure using sticks and skewers.

We use case studies as active learning tools to develop students who think creatively and critically in solving environmental problems, and communicate and work effectively in teams as they apply science concepts to propose and test their solutions to real environmental problems.

Whizz Kid aims to arouse students’ interest in learning beyond the classroom, equip students with 21st century skills and highlight to students real environmental issues.

Environment Ambassadors

At Si Ling Primary School, our Environment Ambassadors (EAs) are passionate student leaders who champion environmental sustainability and inspire their peers to make a positive impact on the environment. Through a structured leadership development programme, students are nurtured to become confident communicators, responsible role models and active advocates for sustainable living.

Selected students are appointed as Environment Ambassadors through a selection process that recognises their passion, commitment and leadership potential. Throughout the year, they are provided with authentic opportunities to plan, lead and serve the school community.

Responsibilities of our Environment Ambassadors

Our Environment Ambassadors take on a wide range of leadership roles, including:

  • Leading classroom, assembly and public awareness presentations on environmental issues and sustainable practices.

  • Organising and facilitating school-wide environmental campaigns and iCARE initiatives, including recycling, water conservation, energy conservation, biodiversity, dengue prevention and sustainable consumption.

  • Planning and conducting engaging recess activities, interactive games and hands-on learning experiences for their peers.

  • Managing the Let's Recycle! programme by promoting responsible recycling habits and supporting the school's Level Solidarity Challenge.

  • Promoting responsible recycling of drink cartons, batteries and electronic waste through the school's recycling initiatives.

  • Conducting environmental audits, such as energy-saving and recycling checks, to encourage sustainable habits across the school.

  • Supporting environmental learning programmes, workshops, school events, outreach programmes and Open House activities.

  • Working alongside staff and external partners to promote environmental stewardship within the school and wider community.

Leadership Development

Our Environment Ambassadors participate in a progressive leadership programme that develops both their environmental knowledge and leadership competencies. Through regular training, mentoring and authentic leadership opportunities, students strengthen their:

  • Leadership and teamwork skills

  • Public speaking and presentation skills

  • Communication and facilitation skills

  • Event planning and organisation skills

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking

  • Confidence in leading peers and engaging the wider community

Students are also empowered to design and lead meaningful environmental initiatives that encourage positive behaviour change and cultivate a culture of sustainability throughout the school.

SciEinsteins

SciEinsteins is our Environmental Science Club for students who are curious about science and passionate about creating a more sustainable future. Through hands-on investigations, innovation challenges and community outreach, members develop scientific inquiry skills while exploring real-world environmental issues.

Members participate in a wide range of authentic learning experiences, including conducting environmental investigations, designing innovative solutions to sustainability challenges, and supporting school-wide environmental initiatives. They work closely with our Environment Ambassadors to develop resources, plan interactive activities and engage the school community during programmes such as iCARE Week, environmental campaigns and school events.

Beyond the classroom, SciEinsteins members contribute to projects such as biodiversity conservation, gardening and planting, sustainable living initiatives, and environmental exhibitions. They also represent the school in environmental competitions, showcases and outreach programmes, where they share their ideas and inspire others to care for the environment.

Through these enriching experiences, students develop scientific thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and leadership skills while becoming confident environmental advocates who are ready to make a positive impact on their community.
